Rallying to Fund Climate Justice in New York

The cold rain of early spring in Manhattan did not dampen the spirits of 70 stalwart climate activists who showed up on March 24 outside the offices of New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

Together in voice and determination, the crowd sang, chanted, and called on the Governor to follow through on legally binding commitments to fund climate justice and move the state off fossil fuels.

More than a dozen Dayenu activists joined the rally as part of our New York campaign to Fund Climate Justice in 2025. The campaign focuses on getting Governor Hochul to set a strict pollution cap and raise funds for communities that have suffered the most from poverty, pollution, and dirty fossil fuels through a Cap-Trade-and-Invest system. In order for this program to move forward, the Governor must release the draft regulations that have been sitting on Hochul’s desk for more than a year.

Dayenu’s Noa Gordon-Guterman MC’d the rally, and Rabbi Lexie Botzum spoke about the urgency to take action in the face of the devastation already caused by the climate crisis.

Other speakers included Cameron Clarke of WE ACT for Environmental Justice, Reverend Dr. Liz Theoharis of Poor People’s Campaign, Alice Schwartz and Izzy Militello of Sixth Street Community Center, Reverend Mira Sawlani-Joyner of Riverside Church, and Faiza Azam of ALIGN. The crowd was supported by music from Rude Mechanical Orchestra

This event concluded NY Renews’ March Week of Action, which featured six rallies at the Governor’s regional offices around the state.

As we approach the impending release of the first set of Cap-and-Invest regulations, we are making sure our voices are heard  – and that the Governor releases all of the Cap-and-Invest Regulations without further delay.

Thanks to Patrick Nevada of Align for the great photos.
