Dayenu Principles

As Dayenu organizers and leaders, we hold ourselves to these principles, and aspire to reflect them in our work.

We are focused on systemic, structural solutions to the climate crisis. We seek to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions well before 2050 and build a world that is just, equitable, and livable for all people for generations to come.

We are committed to equity and justice. We recognize that the climate crisis exacerbates historical inequities, even as its impacts spread far and wide to every corner of the world. We believe that the solutions to the crisis must center those most impacted and that we are called lirdof tzedek, to pursue justice.

We are rooted in Jewish values, wisdom, and tradition. Grounded in Jewish history and experience, we bring spirit, faith, and song to our work, engaging with both urgency and hope.

We are committed to building power from the ground up. We recognize that everyone has a stake in confronting this crisis. That’s why we’re building a movement through deliberate recruitment, storytelling, training, mentorship, authentic leadership opportunities, and volunteer engagement. Understanding how the climate crisis impacts us and our families directly allows us to work in solidarity with others and build power.

We seek to close the gap between the world as it is, and the world as it should be. We are committed to effective political, economic, and cultural change. The ultimate measure of success is the real impact we have on mitigating the climate crisis and building equitable solutions.

We are welcoming. We are building a multi-generational, multi-racial, multi-ethnic people-powered movement of diverse Jews from different parts of the Jewish community. We create inclusive spaces and actively work to dismantle racism, bigotry, and hate as we do our work.

We invest in partnerships. We partner closely with other organizations and efforts — within and beyond the Jewish community — to help bring the full strength and voice of the American Jewish community to local, national and global movements. We are all more powerful when we work together.

We use non-violent means to achieve change. We are committed to nonviolence, inspired by peaceful movements before us, and recognize strategic nonviolence as the most effective means to close the gap between the world as it is and the world we envision.
