Dayenu activists in California have been pulling out all the stops to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for all the damage that it — knowingly — has caused. For weeks, we’ve been advocating for the Make Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Bill — with phone calls, emails, marches, and meetings both online and in person. It’s been a true team effort, engaging people from across the state, of all ages, speaking out for the future of the state and the planet.
This past week, we had an in-person lobby meeting at Assemblymember Wick’s office in East Bay. We had representatives from Chochmat Halev Dayenu Circle, Netivot Shalom Dayenu Circle, Berkeley Hillel students and staff, and the Aquarian Minyan.
From one participant: “It was a great crew and everyone did a fabulous job making our point. Yael shared a beautiful personal story, Grey did a great job setting up the problem and affirming that we want to build a relationship with them as a staffers, Joel nailed the description of the bill, and Shosh and our Berkeley students made great direct asks. Big success!
Wicks’ staff told us this bill was the one they’ve heard about the most often of any bill this session, so the advocacy is really showing! We also went to State Senator Arreguin’s office to try to get a meeting scheduled, because they’ve been hard to get hold of, and we connected with the district director and will follow up with her to get that meeting scheduled as well.”
We held several lobby meetings with Assemblymembers online, featuring our dogged and informed activists.
California residents: Your legislators need to hear from you as they decide how to vote on this bill.
Take action by calling them today and urging them to #MakePollutersPay.
Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay), shared the following update on AB 1243, the Climate Superfund Act, after a press conference at the State Capitol on April 29, 2025:
“The overwhelming outpouring of support from labor groups, environmental champions, business owners, doctors, nurses, and regular people in support of AB 1243 clearly shows just how important holding Big Oil accountable and addressing climate change is for California.
“Today I have decided to postpone the committee vote to allow more time for meaningful conversations with stakeholders and will continue to push this policy forward. We know given recent federal actions, the state budget may experience deficits. AB 1243 provides a material way to address these issues.”
AB 1243 is currently in Assembly Judiciary Committee.
