In 2022, after decades of frontline-led community organizing, the California legislature passed SB1137: a law establishing a 3,200 ft health and safety buffer zone between oil and gas drilling and homes, schools, and hospitals. This landmark bill protects the health and safety of CA communities, especially the frontline communities who suffer the worst health impacts from oil and gas extraction in their backyards. This law is also an important step towards a safe and healthy planet for us all: it closes 25% of the state’s dirtiest oil and gas production – oil that needs to stay in the ground to avoid catastrophic climate change.

Predictably, the oil and gas industry is spending millions of dollars to try to overturn the law through a statewide ballot referendum in November 2024. Their primary tactic seems to be to mislead the public about what we are voting on, through a multi-million dollar ad campaign.

THIS MAY, Dayenu and the RAC-CA are organizING TWO GATHERINGS – ONE IN NORTHERN California and one in southern california – to KICKSTART EFFORTS TO KEEP the health and safety buffer zone.
